In addition to providing a means to run SQL statements against SQL Server and MSDE databases, the OSQL utility provides a way to get information about the servers on the network.
Run the OSQL utility with the -L switch from your command line to return all available network-visible SQL Server and MSDE Servers on the network.
osql -L
The OSQL utility ships with SQL Server and MSDE. If you have SQL Server or MSDE installed on your local machine, you can run the OSQL utility directly from the DOS prompt.
This command is particularly useful when you need to connect to a SQL Server but aren’t sure of the exact server name or instance name. The list will show all discoverable SQL Server instances on your network.
