SQuirreL SQL has been around since 2001. It’s open source, cross-platform (via Java), and connects to any database that has a JDBC driver. That’s a real advantage if you’re in an environment where JDBC coverage matters.
The trade-off: SQuirreL SQL is a Java Swing app, and it looks like one. Before you connect to anything, you’re installing a JRE, downloading JDBC drivers, and navigating a plugin configuration UI that was modern when dial-up internet was a thing.
Beekeeper Studio skips all that. Same open source ethos, same cross-platform story (Mac, Linux, Windows), but as a standalone app that launches fast, looks like it was built this decade, and gets you from download to running queries in about thirty seconds.
Both tools are open source and cross-platform. Where they diverge is the experience of actually using them.
SQuirreL SQL’s JDBC architecture is its main strength. If you need an unusual database driver (a legacy enterprise system, an obscure connector your organization runs on), it’s hard to beat. The plugin ecosystem means it’s been extended in many directions over the twenty-plus years it’s been alive.
Beekeeper Studio takes the opposite approach: cover the databases developers actually use day-to-day (Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, SQLite, and more), and make that experience fast and clean. No JVM startup time, no driver download ceremony, real autocomplete, a table view that edits like a spreadsheet, and a UI that doesn’t require a tutorial to navigate.
Use SQuirreL SQL if you need JDBC flexibility for an obscure or legacy driver, or you’re in a Java-heavy enterprise environment where JDBC is a requirement.
